Wisconsites win innaugural title!

Before I get into the tournament, I want to remind you that this coming Wednesday night, the night before Thanksgiving, is a big social event every year. There will be open paddle, and potentially some “Challenge Matches”, where two lower ranked players challenge two higher ranked players in a league point battle for all to enjoy. An upset can result in a big move, so tensions will be high, assuming they can get the blessings of Schmeeds and MVP to actually do this.
Inaugural Brew City Open
I know what you’re thinking, this tourney’s been going on since the late 90’s, inaugural my a$$. Well I changed (stole) the name and moved the main matches to Cedar Club, and we added a women’s draw, so we’re going with inaugural. Your TLDR summary for those who want to skip my ramblings: everyone had a blast (see img_7727), players want to come back, co-ed was a hit, Cedar Club was a hit, and Wisconsin paddle had itself a day.
FYI extra shirts are for sale in the clubhouse, they’re pretty, pretty comfy. A nice, thinner option for the wardrobe.
The tournament was a great success, largely because of the support from many of you. From bringing out chairs, cleaning the place up, MVP being a stellar host and hut captain, Bruce Hutson killing it with a Bloody Mary bar (now a permanent role for BP), Tommy boy with setup and teardown, and many members coming out to contribute to the atmosphere. I really appreciate everyone’s help.
We accomplished our goal of filling out the draw (12+ teams waitlisted), and building momentum for a better event next year.
The addition of a women’s draw was a huge hit. They loved the club and the club loved them. The MacKay sister’s (women’s draw coordinator and one of two Wisconsin teams on the lady side) semifinal match was the highlight of the tournament as they fired up the crowd, ultimately losing a close third set. The atmosphere all day was improved by the better gender in general.
As expected, The Cedar Club itself was one of the highlights of the tournament, so I’m happy to report the club showed off well.
NOT TO MENTION, Wisconsin paddlers showed out! For the first time in tournament history, the Wisconsin State Open was won by Wisconsin players, Vuk and Adam Schumacher (who lives in Chicago but played tennis at Madison, so we’re claiming him). An awesome way to kickoff the tournament rebrand/relaunch, whatever you want to call it.
Drew came through and saved the day with a great official trophy, see men’s champs image attached.
Paloma Taco was fabulous as always. Still eating leftovers, probably why I haven’t been able to get to writing this email.
From the players side: there were 5 teams of pure Cedar Club Blood, and two half breeds of Drew Lied/Caio Barros, and Vuk (the Boogeyman) and Adam Schumacher. 12 players from Cedar in a 16 team draw!
- Of the seven teams, 5 first round matches were won.
- Highlighting some performances…
- Arvy and Deam dominated 6-1, 6-1 before losing to the 1 seed. Deam got injured and their sun run ended with a walkover to Kas and Katz. Do I smell a challenge match???
- MJ and Brock won a 2hr battle round 1 which fuked the whole day personally and schedule wise: 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (12-10), went on to lose round 2 and then win the all Cedar Club Quarter Reprieve final vs. katzban and Kasner. This was the last match of the night, cool to have all cedar clubbers close it out.
- Kasner and Katzban upset the 4 seed in the first round in a great win, then had to face Vuk and some dude.
- Drew and Caio came through with an impressive performance, playing in a highlight match at the cedar club, main draw semifinals, against Ong and Oaks (Not Ryan who some thought was the 1 seed) who proved to be too tough. A blast to watch. Some REAL aggressive cedar club cheering was great to see, Ong and Oaks were great sports about it and enjoyed the gladiatorial atmosphere.
- CJ and Murpy (ranked 15 at cedar last week) did in fact NOT beat Oaks and Ong (currently ranked 14 in the country). But CJ and ST did get a win!
- Zipp and Foster were in the event. (unnecessary drive by…should say they also won a match)
- Every Wisconsin team won at least one match!
- The finals, as expected, were between the top two teams. The outcome surprised many…
- Wisconsin’s own Vukasin Teofanovic and Adam Schumacher took home the title!!! Defeating #14 in the country Andrew Ong, and his partner Danny Oaks (who frequently plays with Vuk)
- The Boogeyman is inevitable.
