Farley & Fleming Win Holiday Tourney
Winter platform tennis in Wisconsin doesn’t get any better than an informal year-end impromptu tournament at the Cedar Club on a cold December night. Heaters, cooking the new falling snow, created a steam bath of action that was dominated by two unlikely paddle brothers, John Michael Fleming and George Michael Farley.
“Let’s GOOOOOOOOO!” became the mantra for these aging rock stars as they alone, won all four of their 10-game pro set matches throughout the night, culminating in their take down of runner ups, Matt Monroe and Mike Jelinski 10-7.
“I was club champion in 2009,” mused the Consolation King, Mike Farley, “so it’s been a long time since I was a true champion of the club.” He went on, as he always does, “I had faith in my partners who had faith in me… and faith to let my fantastic B-play really take over tonight.”
John Michael, never at a loss for words either, had this to say, “We came, we saw, we kicked ass!”
Sadly, there is no plaque on the garage wall for this stunning victory, and to be honest, no one cares… BUT, a big shout out to Dan Einhorn for making the bacon-wrapped weenie cook-out, Bear for improving his recipe and Nick Creten for pouring the Fireballs. Good going all for the heckling and comraderie that can only be found at the UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT CEDAR CLUB.
Next time an impromptu tourney materializes, just say YES, and have the best night of your year! Just ask John & George Michael.
(OK, don’t ask Farley… he made some long stupid ass quote on his paddle play, tomahawks, setting up A-players with winners and some sh*t about losing an eyeball — but it seemed only important to him, so we never got the quote — you can just imagine the rest)
Most people would think that we were nuts to go out in 20 degree weather and play tennis. They couldn’t be more wrong. Even though the steam on the court was the biggest enemy to better paddle play (fun tip: don’t breathe while returning serve), most would tell you that it was close to a perfect night for paddle. If you have ANY racquet skills, and even if you play pickleball, YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS GAME OUT! Ask a member and he (or she) will invite you up to the club to play off the screens.
